Melissa Holding specialises in playing the koto, the traditional 13-stringed zither of Japan. She lived and studied in Japan for 9 years and has given concerts all over the UK both as a soloist and with the contemporary music ensemble Okeanos, performing at many festivals including the City of London, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festivals and with whom she has also played on BBC radio 3’s Hear and Now and In Tune programs. She has worked for the National Theatre as composer and musical director for The Oresteia and Ivanov and has written and devised a solo koto score for the 1930s silent Japanese film Taki No Shiraito (dir. Mizoguchi) which she performed at the Barbican. Tonight, she will play a range of pieces from the 17th century classical repertoire to more recent works by Japanese composers in addition to some of her own compositions.
There will also be the opportunity to learn about Kendo from the Southampton Kendo Club.
Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art, descended from kenjutsu, that uses bamboo swords as well as protective armor. Today, it is widely practiced within Japan and has spread to many other nations across the world.
