Westbourne signalled the start of its festive season with a resounding display of community spirit this weekend, as football icon Harry Redknapp switched on the district's Christmas lights before a packed crowd. The event, hosted by the Bournemouth Coastal BID, transformed the popular coastal village into a hub of celebration, drawing families and residents to the high street and Victorian Arcade for an evening defined not just by spectacle, but by genuine local connection.

Redknapp, a figure synonymous with the area, captured the mood perfectly as he addressed the audience, noting that "Christmas is about community, helping each other and being kind," a sentiment visibly shared by the huge turnout. His presence, secured by local independent retailer Baks Menswear, underscored the unique fabric of Westbourne, where personal relationships between traders and the community drive the local economy. Unlike generic town centre activations, Westbourne’s festive offering is a product of this distinct independent ecosystem, with businesses investing directly to create a welcoming environment for visitors.
This collaborative effort was visible in every detail of the switch-on. The central Christmas tree was donated by The Hutch, recently named Café of the Year, and its sister salon, Warren & The Hare, demonstrating how award-winning local businesses are reinvesting in their neighbourhood. Adding to the magic, Santa Claus made a special arrival courtesy of the wellness café Ete Westbourne, while the streetscape itself has been elevated for 2025 with the installation of traditional festoon lighting. Funded entirely by the traders and the BID, this enhancement was made possible through a collaborative partnership with BCP Council, whose support in securing permissions enabled the area's historic architecture to shine.
For those who missed the opening night, the festivities continue. On Saturday, 6th December, the district will host "Christmas Comes to Westbourne," a full-day event featuring real donkeys on The Green, performances by the Sound of Soul Choir, and further visits from Santa. True to the area's community ethos, the day will also support the Hope for Food charity, with mince pies provided by Tesco Branksome.
