Beethoven Now

Delve into the life of Beethoven with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on Saturday 31 October. Enjoy readings, performances, discussion and debate at Canford School and learn more about the man behind some of the most famous and influential works in the classical music canon.

Beethoven’s life will be illustrated by readings from his letters by accomplished stage and screen actor, Samuel West, accompanied by excerpts from his string quartets; percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will help us understand more about the musical and social implications of deafness; and Beethoven aficionado, John Suchet, talks about his Beethoven biography. The afternoon ends with an ‘Any Questions’ debate chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby. Hosted by Sarah Walker, the afternoon offers some unique insights into why Beethoven has such universal appeal and timeless significance.

This event is part of the BSO’s Beethoven Cycle ‘Road to Joy’, which marks the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death in March 1827. Celebrating each of the symphonies in turn with an 18-month project, a timeless and timely opportunity to engage in what Beethoven means to us today.
