Place Mill

About Us

Place Mill is a heritage Mill, situated on the Quomps, Christchurch Quay. It is one of the key heritage sites in Christchurch, alongside Christchurch Castle, the Norman House, and the Priory.

Dating back to the 11th Century (a mill on this site was mentioned in the Domesday Book!), the Mill showcases evidence of Saxon and Tudor brickwork, and inside offers visitors a chance to explore a replica of the historical tools and equipment of the mill. This includes the Great Spur Wheel which is driven by the waterwheel through a series of cogs, which turn the millstones on the first floor.

The Mill Stream branches from the River Avon almost a kilometre away at Brewhouse Hole. Place Mill was unique because it took power from one river and discharged it to another - the Stour. Both rivers are tidally affected and flood sometimes following heavy rain.

When the Mill was in production up until 1908, the miller would have ensured almost constant milling by using weirs up river to control the flow. Sadly, the building could not stand the vibration so now it is not possible to demonstrate it working fully.

Place Mill was bought by the Council in 1908 and was rented out as a boat shed. In 1980 it was taken back for restoration & to be made open to the public.

An Exhibition Space

Sitting alongside the mill displays, Place Mill has gallery space that can be used for artist and maker exhibitions. This creates a unique showcase of local heritage and culture for both residents and tourists to enjoy. All exhibitions are free of charge and there will be a selection of artwork on sale.

Solent and Southern Artist Collective

Opening our summer exhibition programme at Place Mill are the Solent & Southern Art Collective. An eclectic group, their practices include oil paintings, acrylic fluid art, graphite, charcoal pieces, photography and even glassware sculpture. Their common theme is the inspiration they take from the beauty of the natural world so there’s no better setting for this exhibition than the picturesque Christchurch Quay.

South Coast Makers brings together talented artists and makers to offer a range of homeware, ceramics, jewellery, art prints, and craft workshops. They celebrate all things local so you know that you’re supporting small businesses and independent makers with every purchase.

CADArts

CADArts (Christchurch and District Arts) have been at the centre of the local arts scene for over 40 years. Aiming to promote participation in, and development of, the Arts amongst the inhabitants of Christchurch and the surrounding area, they’re a perfect fit to exhibit at Place Mill. Enjoy a whole range of artwork by talented local artists and maybe even take home a new original piece!

Christchurch Arts Guild

Founded over 70 years ago in 1948, Christchurch Arts Guild (CAG) is a club for artists in and around the Christchurch area of Dorset. Current members have a diverse range of interests and experience, which will be showcases in this late summer exhibition at the Mill.

BCP Emerging Artists

This group of eclectic artists consists of photographers, film makers, graphic designers, illustrators, painters and sculptors. Each with their own style and techniques, they are coming together to explore the theme of Reformation. Show your support for local talent and experience a whole range of artistic mediums by visiting this unique exhibition at Place Mill.

This exhibition will showcase local artist Michael Hemming and his talent in creating expressive oil and multimedia paintings that capture the drama of the natural world. Hemming's work invites you to connect with the elements and find beauty in every brushstroke. Explore the wonder of the skies and seas through his artwork in this captivating exhibition.

Hengist Group of Artists

Hengist Group of Artists is a club for artists in the Christchurch area. Current members paint a wide variety of subjects using watercolour, oils, acrylic, pastels and mixed media. All members have a passion for painting and this passion can be seen in the final Place Mill exhibition of 2023 – don’t miss it!
