Lettering and Stone Carving Workshop
About Us
This practical course introduces the principles of setting out lettering by hand and cutting inscriptions into stone.
This is a three hour introductory workshop into the art of lettering and engraving, where you will be able to engrave a letter, number or an organic shape on Purbeck stone.
During the session you will learn how to lay out lettering or an organic shape on the stone, where no drawing skills are necessary. You will be shown how to hold and use the tools correctly to make controlled incisions into the stone where a level of concentration and coordination is required. Suitable designs and templates will be provided, although you are most welcome to bring your own ideas and designs to discuss with the tutor.
We are running two classes each day: 10am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm
The activity takes place on the ground floor, in the courtyard marquee

About the Tutor
Anna Bowen is a lettering designer from Dorset. After attending Weymouth college for the fundaments of stonemasonry and carving, she took up an apprenticeship with master brush letter-carver Nick Benson in USA. Anna is a qualified teacher and her first post was lettering tutor for the HND program at Weymouth College. 20 years on in teaching from her own studio, she works to commission in lettering stone, wood and glass.
On occasion she has enjoyed working with others on large projects; the Reading Room at the British Museum, and the Animals in War Memorial, Hyde Park. Locally, her work can be seen at Wareham on street benches and in collaboration as on the six boulders Paul Hyland Purbeck writers project on the South West Coastal Path. Most commonly she creates lettered garden items, memorials and signage. In her spare time she plays 'cello with the Dorset Chamber Orchestra and is a keen Argentine tango dancer.
Anna teaches regularly at Burngate and this year will be teaching her Roman Capital Lettering Carving Skills: Two Day Course; Roman Capital Design & Carve: Four Day Course and her Continuing in Stone courses.
