The history of Christchurch stretches back to the seventh century, when the town was officially formed at the confluence of local rivers the Avon and Stour, which directly flow into Christchurch harbour. The town officially moved from the county of Hampshire to Dorset following local government reorganisation in the 1970s and has continued to blossom in the 21st century as a popular tourist destination that is growing to new audiences year on year. Christchurch is an evolving, exciting destination which sits as a part of the wider Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole coastal conurbation.
As high streets across the UK develop new strategies to adapt with the changing attitudes of consumers, Christchurch offers a variety of bars, restaurants and traditional retail outlets that reflect its broad appeal. Castle ruins sit adjacent to bustling cosmopolitan eateries, reflecting the amalgamation of the town’s heritage with its forward-thinking and positive mindset.
Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Tourism is the official tourist board for the resort, we work with partners and businesses across the destination, led by the Destination Management Board, to create unforgettable memories for the holidaymakers and day trippers that visit the town. Together with BCP Council, local business partners and many other industry organisations and agencies, we are committed to campaigns and innovations that retain our position as a leading resort.
We also integrate services and offers with tourism professionals in the rest of Dorset as well as bordering counties, including Hampshire and Wiltshire, to make sure that our visitors have easy access to everything on offer in the wider region.
From traditional seaside attractions and brand-new adventures to a huge variety of restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as family friendly festivals, it’s no wonder that we’ve got a reputation as an ‘eventful’ destination. There’s so much going on and so much to see, we’re sure you’ll #lovexchurch as much as we do!
