Last week, we announced the winning names of our land train competition. Flotsam and Jetsam have now officially joined the fleet and the competition winner joined the Mayor and Mayoress at the seafront to unveil the new names.

The land trains have been part of Bournemouth’s seafront for many decades and are a much-loved asset to our famous promenade. It’s a pleasure to bring in two brand new trains and give the public the chance to name them.

We had an impressive number of entries – more than 600! Maybe it’s because we were offering the winner a stay in one of the new Bournemouth Beach Lodges. Our seafront team carefully sieved each entry to find the stand-out names. Luke Watkins, who works down at the seafront, told us that he had “some really fun and inspiring entries”. He said it was tricky trying to pick the winning names, but Flotsam and Jetsam worked well as a pair and he liked the maritime theme.

What’s more, the winner wasn’t a Bournemouth resident but couldn’t have been lovelier and is a fantastic ambassador for the town – he loves it down here! Andrew Langley travelled all the way from Harpenden with his wife Suzi to see the newly named train and claim their prize. He said it was “a real thrill to win and a bit of a shock”. Andrew thought his wife was joking when she told him their names had been chosen. They’ve holidayed here as a family for more than 18 years and have always bought a day ticket to travel along the prom with their two boys.
