St Peter's Church Tombstone

"St. Peter’s Church on Hinton Road in the centre of Bournemouth has unveiled a brand new notice board revealing the tombstone locations of some of the iconic figures who have been part of Bournemouth's history and that are buried in their churchyard."

Examples of such figures include:

Mary Shelley - author whose work includes the famous Frankenstein novel

Percy Bysshe Shelley - Mary Shelley's husband and one of the major English Romantic poets, political radical and a free-thinker. The cremated remains of his heart were placed at St Peter's many years after his death.

William Godwin - father of Mary Shelley and a political writer

Mary Wollstonecraft - mother of Mary Shelley and a British feminist author and philosopher.

Captain Lewis Tregonwell - Captain in the Dorset Yeomanry who was the first to purchase land in Bournemouth for residential purposes. Captain Tregonwell later became known as the founder of Bournemouth.

Major General Richard Moody - Leading colonial administrator who was the First Governor of the Falkland Islands and the First Lieutenant Governor of New Caledonia before it became part of the newly formed British Columbia

Sir Dan Godfrey – the Iconic founder and Principal Conductor for 41 year of the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra

Reverend Alexander Morden Bennett – St Peter’s first vicar who stayed in post for over 34 years
