In order for them to have some private time away from the prying eyes, the prince arranged for a house to be built in 1877 for them in the new fashionable watering place of Bournemouth. The Tudor house was built entirely to Lillie's requirements and to this day you can still see the words 'They say, what say they, let them say' carved into the minstrels' gallery.
Lillie lived in the house for four years and entertained many of her famous friends there including Oscar Wilde. She later met Prince Louis of Battenberg with who she had a daughter and embarked on an acting career and achieved considerable success.
The 'Red Brick House' as they had both named it morphed into the Manor Heath Hotel and now the Langtry Manor Hotel. When the current owners bought the hotel, they stumbled across many treasures that had been covered up over the years including an ornately carved wooden fireplace with beautiful blue and gold tiles which had all been chosen by Lillie. All the rooms have now been refurbished to their original splendor.
