Keeping your information safe

"The threat of Phishing, particularly on the World Wide Web, has increased dramatically in recent years. Courtesy of SouthWest Tourism, here’s some advice on how to avoid these scams. "

What is Phishing?
In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details. By masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication, the aim is to make a fraudulent transaction against you or your business.

What should you look out for?
Any fake emails, which appear convincing, as they often replicate the look and style a business would use. Recipients are chosen at random from addresses gathered from the web, or from hijacked customer databases.

Phishing can technically be extended to unsolicited telephone calls, fax instructions or letters trying to convince you they represent your bank, credit card company or another trusted third party.

Always be certain of who you’re dealing with.
Never respond to an email, telephone call, letter or fax instruction from a third party you do not recognise or who cannot be verified.

Be especially cautious if an email contains attachments or hyperlinks.

Look after your security details - your PIN number and password is the key to your online accounts and information, always keep these secure and never share them with anybody.

Change your password regularly and remember your bank will never ask you to supply your complete password or PIN in order to access Internet banking services.

Stay safe online
Whilst online check the security of e-commerce sites, log out properly from secure sites
and always exercise caution when using computers in public places.
